With one of the driest Junes on record just passed we are now beginning to hear talk of water shortages, hose pipe bans and restrictions on water usage for pools, watering gardens and washing cars. There is also a public debate taking place about water metering and its arrival over the next couple of years.
If we are to take anything from this, it’s the realisation that water is a finite resource and not something we should take for granted.
It’s difficult to appreciate that we might have water shortages when you cast your mind back to the west of Ireland last November when towns like Ballinasloe and Gort were submerged in four feet of water and causing millions of euros worth of damage. Since then, we have had a very cold but dry winter and spring. Summer so far has been much drier than usual.
On a global basis, less than 1% of the world’s water is available for human consumption and usage is escalating at an alarming rate due to population growth and industrial expansion.
Now you can invest in water through the KBC Water Fund.
This is a fund which invests in water infrastructure companies, water utility companies and water technology companies.
Water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource, especially in the third world and a millions are being invested in the industry to ensure a safe supply is being provided for the world’s population. Investing in the Water Fund allows you to take advantage of these investments and infrastrucure spending.
The fund is a high risk fund, as it’s invested in equities in the one sector, but it’s a sector which should continue to see increased growth over the coming years. Anyone considering investing in such a fund should use it for a small part of their overall investment portolio. It’s an area which should prove interesting over the next ten to twenty years.
The Fund is available through New Ireland and is open to both Pension and Investment clients.
